These Championship Celebrations Got Out Of Hand Fast!

athletes | 6/26/18

The biggest victories in sports always come with the best celebrations. Some celebrations, in our opinion, were born different; were born special. These celebrations are endlessly watchable.

The celebrations we’ve chosen to highlight are legendary. You might not even remember the victory they’re celebrating! When the champagne shower begins, and the goggles go on, there is no stopping the party for these professionals. Just wait until you see how the German National team danced for their fans in 2014!

Alexander Ovechkin Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

It’s hard to blame Alexander Ovechkin for refusing to stop after winning the Stanley Cup. He’s partied just about everywhere, has slept with the cup, done a keg stand out of the cup, and has taken the trophy to bars citywide for karaoke with fans!

As long as Ovechkin keeps partying, no one in Washington will care that their MLB team is in the hunt for October. The Summer of 2018 in our nation’s capital is officially the “Summer of Ovi.” This celebration might be the best championship celebration ever, but the ones you’re about to read about are all trying their best to get on Ovechkin’s level!

Madison Bumgarner Chugged Six Beers At Once

Our next epic individual celebration comes courtesy of Giants’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner. When his team clinched the NLCS in 2014, he celebrated the only way he knew how; by chugging six beers at once! Of course, he didn’t learn how to chug six beers overnight.

His celebration starts with the NL Wild Card game. The Giants won, and “MadBum” chugged four beers. Next was the NLDS. He upped the ante and chugged five beers! When the Giants won the World Series, oddly enough, he chugged one beer and was very proper about it. Next, did the mayor of Los Angeles really just say that?

How Many F-Bombs Are Too Many?

The answer is there are never too many “f-bombs” when championships are won. Emotions are running, and athletes can’t always watch their tongue! Our favorite curse-filled celebration doesn’t come from a player though; it comes from the mayor of Los Angeles.

The Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2014, and Mayor Garcetti had some trouble being proper, “They say never ever be pictured with a drink in your hand, and never ever swear. But this is a big [expletive] day.” Unfortunately, he didn’t have a drink in his hand, but his sailor’s language still gets a passing grade from us!

Jordan Spieth Had The Most Un-Golflike Celebration Of All-Time

Golf is not a game known for emotional outbursts from players. When Jordan Spieth won the Travelers Championship in 2017 and threw his club at his caddie in celebration, he probably lost some fans. And gained some too! It’s a beautiful thing watching athletes lose control of their emotions.

The best part isn’t Spieth throwing his club, though. It’s really when he runs up to his caddy then jumps into his chest. This move is probably the least golf-like thing that has ever happened at a major tournament. Thank you for the memories, Jordan Spieth. Coming up, Marshawn Lynch is only here so he won’t get fined.

Marshawn Lynch Danced The Media Session Away

marshawn lynch.jpg

Winning the Super Bowl is no small feat. Marshawn Lynch was the workhorse of the Seattle Seahawks 2014 Super Bowl win. Instead of giving the media any time of day when the game ended, Lynch turned up his music and created his own dance floor. We’re not sure he ever stopped dancing!

The celebration was classic Marshawn. The only time he spoke to the media during the season was to say, “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.” He never got fined, and his party for one will never be forgotten. Coming up, the German National team has a dance Marshawn would be jealous of!

The German National Team Does The Most German Thing Possible

The year 2014 was filled with fantastic championship celebrations. The German National Team tried to top them all after winning the World Cup. During the victory parade the German went full German and had one of the strangest, and best celebrations of all-time.

Perhaps as a nod for the love of David Hasselhoff, the team came out to a choreographed dance, each player sporting their own unique moves. After revealing the Jules Rimet Trophy to their fans, they broke out into a ridiculous air guitar routine that has to been seen to be believed!

Brandi Chastain Wasn’t Worried About Being Proper

brandi chastain.jpg

Few championships elicit as much spontaneous emotion as the World Cup. Don’t believe us? Just ask Brandi Chastain. She ripped her shirt off in excitement after kicking the title-winning goal for the U.S. Women’s National Team in 1999.

Even though she was wearing a sports bra underneath, she was heavily criticized for “undressing” in front of the world. The controversy, luckily, didn’t last very long as several athletes came to her defense. Today, Chastain’s celebration is remembered for how joyous it was. Next, Carlos Correia won the World Series, then did what?

Carlos Correa Won The World Series Then Proposed To His Girlfriend

Game seven of the 2017 World Series could have been an absolute disaster for Carlos Correa. The good news is it wasn’t. The Astros beat the Dodgers to take home the title and Correia got on one knee during a national interview and proposed to his girlfriend. She said yes.

Pretty amazing, right? Let’s stop and think for a second about how bad this could have been. Correa could have lost, and not proposed. Or, after proposing, his now-fiance could have said no, on live TV, after the biggest moment of his life. Good thing the world can’t be cruel all the time!

Boston Bruins Blew Through $157,000 Of Alchohol

In 2011, the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup and partied like the kings. The team went to the MGM Grand and bought a $100,000 worth of Ace of Spades “Midas” champagne. Combine that with hundreds of Red Bulls, Budweiser, and water bottles, and the team spent a whopping $157,679. Alexander Ovechkin wishes he was there!

Shockingly, spending nearly $200,000 on alcohol isn’t the most money a team has blown in the name of celebration. Keep reading to learn how much alcohol the 2018 Warriors had at their victory parade!

Golden State Warriors Toast With $500,000 Worth Of Booze

As the Golden State Warriors paraded down the streets of Oakland celebrating their 2018 NBA title, no one knew they were carrying half a million dollars worth of booze with them. One thing is for sure; no player ran out of alcohol that day. Although, one player would make you think he did.

Jordan Bell was drinking Hennesy in his bus when his bottle ran out. Instead of going into his supply, he found someone in the crowd drinking Hennesy, ran into the street, and took a championship sized swig. We better he felt “great” the next morning.

Cubs Fans Gathered In Record Numbers

Not winning a championship since 1908 meant a lot of Cubs fans were waiting a very long time when they finally broke through in 2016. At the team’s victory parade, over five million elated fans showed up. Unimpressed? Consider this; it was the seventh largest gathering in human history!

To be clear, we’re not talking about sports history. According to real, honest to God historians, the crowd was historic. It was the largest ever in the Western Hemisphere and is the largest non-religious gathering in human history! Coming up, no team parties like UCF teams who declare themselves National Champions without winning!

UCF Celebrates Like The Champions They Should Have Been

The University of Central Florida felt slighted by the NCAA when they were left out of the College Football Playoff in 2017. Instead, they won the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and decided that made them National Champions. The celebration that followed would put Alabama’s (the actual National Champions) to shame.

First, the school’s athletic director had National Championship gear made for the school. Then Disney World held a UCF victory parade. One crowd-goer even proudly proclaimed, “All the SEC mouthpiece people, that’s all they could talk about all week.”

Jalen Mills And The Eagles Embraced Being The Underdog

The Philadelphia Eagles became the underdogs of the NFL when they plowed through the 2018 playoffs with a backup quarterback. When they beat the Minnesota Vikings to clinch their ticket to the big show, Jalen Mills put on a dog mask and ran around the stadium in ecstasy.

At one point Mills even dropped to the ground and made confetti angels. The celebration embraced then narrative of the team, led by ultimate underdog Nick Foles. They would, of course, ride their momentum into the Super Bowl and beat the Patriots to earn their first-ever Lombardi Trophy.

Dikembe Mutombo Refused To Give The Ball Back

Facing the top-seeded Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the playoffs, Dikembe Mutombo and the Denver Nuggets became the first eighth seed to win a playoff series. The final game ended with series star Mutombo on his back, refusing to give the ball to anyone.

The whistle had blown, and there was Mutombo, refusing to the let feeling die. The Nuggets wouldn’t make the NBA Finals, but taking down the top seed in their conference must have felt like winning it all. He said after the key was the team never gave up. And he never gave up the ball, giving us one of the most iconic celebrations ever.

Rickie Fowler Was The Best Ninth Wheel

Let’s talk about golf! In 2016, the United States won the Ryder Cup, and the celebrations were precisely what you would expect except for Rickie Fowler. In the classic picture above, you see his teammates embracing their significant others. Fowler looks into the camera and shrugs.

At the time, Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press said Fowler was the “awkward ninth wheel.” We think he’s in on the joke, actually. Fowler clearly knows the camera is around him, why not ham it up for the press on one of the biggest days of his life! Coming up, what did LeBron say about anyone not rooting for Cleveland?

LeBron James Proclaims It’s “Cleveland Against The World”

One hour before the Cleveland Indians were set to play game one of the World Series against the Cubs, the Cavaliers go their rings. Speaking to sold-out Quicken Loans Arena, LeBron James made a bold statement, “At this point, if you’re not from here, live here, play here, dedicate yourself to Cleveland, then it makes no sense to even live at this point. Cleveland against the world.”

Wow! The fans, of course, at it up. They had been waiting for a championship for over fifty years. James came back to Cleveland after a detour in Miami to be the hometown hero. After that speech, we’d say he’s a hometown legend!

The Giants Partied With Seal In 2012

The New York Giants took championship celebrations to the next level in 2012 when they defeated Tom Brady for the second time in Super Bowl 48. Legendary singer Seal met the team in the locker room for their champagne-soaked party.

Seal, who you’d think would be an Eagles fans thanks to his hit, “Fly Like an Eagle,” kissed the Giants with a rose and lived it up with Eli Manning and company. Then again, he might have ended up in the wrong locker room, telling the media he was rooting for the Patriots. Oops.

Klay Thompson Googles Himself Before Walking Off The Stage

Alcohol may have encouraged Klay Thompson to walk off the stage after googling himself during a press conference after the Warriors 2018 NBA Title. The usually soft-spoken star stared at his phone before teammate Draymond Green let everyone know Wikipedia had updated Thompson’s page to say “Three-time NBA Champion.”

Thompson whooped at the discovery, then tossed his towel down and exited stage left. Probably to keep the party going. As we already know, no one parties quite like the Golden State Warriors.

Mankind Broke Character After Winning The WWE Title

Back when it was still known as the WWF, Mankind reverted to Mick Foley after defeating The Rock to win his first title. When it happened, Mankind took off his mask, revealing the man underneath, and ran circles around the ring with pure joy on his face. He hugged fans in the crowd and couldn’t stop smiling.

Since his giddy celebration, Foley has said that winning the title was the most memorable moment of his career. The victory also became the moment WWE overtook WCW as the most watched wrestling program. According to reports, 600,000 viewers switched station right before Foley won.

Slip N’ Slides Aren’t Just For Children

Staying in Los Angeles, the Galaxy turned their locker room into a drunken Slip N’ Slide after winning the MLS Cup in 2014. The game was Landon Donovan’s send-off (at the time), and his team said goodbye by soaking the floor in alcohol and seeing how far he could slide!

This is easily one of the most creative championship celebrations we’ve seen. One of the players must have been planning it before the game. There’s no way it was a spur of the moment type thing. Then again, crazier things have happened with less thought behind them.
