The Arizona Diamondbacks natural grass field is being replaced with synthetic turf just in time for the 2019 season.
Chase Field will soon be home to new state-of-the-art synthetic grass from Shaw Sports Turk. The high-performance synthetic product is designed specifically for baseball and it’s expected to be ready just in time for Opening Day 2019.
D-back President & CEO Derrick Hall had this to say about the decision:
“Our Baseball Operations staff has completed extensive research, including site visits and player testing and we are all in agreement that this is the best decision for our franchise.”
“Research has shown the performance and health benefits associated with playing on this surface that did not previously exist, which factored heavily into our decision. Additionally, our ability to keep the roof closed during the summer months will allow Chase Field to remain at a perfect temperature for our fans, which has become increasingly difficult over the last several years,” Hall added.
It’s not really a surprising move, it has been tough for the D-Backs to grow grass in the cities climate. The team investigated several different options over the years and finally found a solution from Shaw.
The “Batting a Thousand” Natural Turf is a dual fiber system that combines Shaw’s high-performance Strenexe XD slit film and Shaw’s Bolt® monofilament. The new system prevents the infill from “splashing” while maintaining adequate infill levels across the field.
Players should expect better ball roll and the right amount of friction. In fact, the team is convinced they will essentially be playing on the same consistent surface they’ve been maintaining since 1998.
