This Pit Bull Wasn’t Going To Leave His Best Friend Behind

Animals | 1/17/20

We often hear dogs referred to as "man's best friend," but dogs can have more than one best friend, you know. Dogs are extremely loyal creatures and they often form bonds with each other, especially if they've been through something scary or traumatic together. When a pit bull and a chihuahua were brought into a shelter together, they refused to leave each other's sides. These two were the best of friends.

When somebody came in wanting to adopt the pit bull but not the chihuahua, the pit bull was having none of it. Keep reading to find out what happened next.

Only Each Other For Comfort

This is a photo of Merrill, a female pit bull mix, and Taco, a male chihuahua. These two adorable pups were surrendered to the Rocket Dog Rescue in October 2014. These two pups seemed to be perfectly well behaved, so none of the staff at the rescue understood how their owner could give them up. The staff noticed that Merril and Taco stuck by each other. They were inseparable.

The shelter knew that they had to find a home that had enough space and love for both Merril and Taco.

While Merrill and Taco's past remained a mystery to the volunteers at Rocket Dog Rescue, they could see that the two dogs were basically attached at the hip.

They couldn't handle being separated even for a moment. When the shelter posted a photo of Merrill and Taco on their website, they captioned the photo, "We just could not stand the thought of them being separated or waiting at the shelter for months to find a home TOGETHER."

Merrill's Shocking Backstory

The veterinarians at Rocket Dog Rescue assessed Merrill and Taco upon arrival and found that they weren't in the best of shape. In Merrill's case, they estimated that she was about three years old and that she was probably being used for breeding.

She also had a life-threatening urinary tract infection. This meant she couldn't breed anymore, which is probably why her owners gave her up. Just as she was about to receive surgery, something strange happened.

Taco had a really hard time being by himself when Merrill was taken in for surgery. Taco was approximately eight years old at the time. When Merrill was away from him, he started showing signs of distress.

When they were reunited after the surgery, Taco couldn't contain his excitement. Both of the dogs were wailing and wagging their tails. After Merrill's infection was taken care of, the two dogs were ready to be put up for adoption.

Taco couldn't handle being without Merrill while she was recovering, so the staff at the rescue center let the two pups recover together. The rescue employees let Taco see Merrill while she was still inside the operating room. Taco immediately went to his friend's side to comfort her.

At that point, the rescue team knew that they couldn't separate these dogs again. They would have to find a home together. But finding somebody willing to adopt a pit bull and a chihuahua wouldn't be an easy task.

Concerns About Their Future

The rescue staff were concerned that it would be a long while before the perfect forever home for these two would come along. People aren't usually willing to adopt two dogs at the same time.

The rescue team posted Merrill and Taco's photos separately, and while each dog individually had attracted several potential owners, nobody was willing to take both dogs into their home. Things were looking grim for Merrill and Taco. The rescue staff kept hoping for a good outcome.

Eventually, the rescue staff realized that it might be impossible to find these two pups a home together. They decided to look for potential adopters for the dogs individually. A lot of people expressed an interest in adopting Merrill, who was a young and beautiful pit bull mix. Taco, however, was quite an old dog at the time. He had fewer people interested in adopting him.

One day, a man came by the shelter to meet Merrill and possibly take her home.

This man met Merrill, and pretty much as soon as he met her, he was ready to adopt her. He signed all of the necessary paperwork and got ready to take her home. When he got to the cage she shared with Taco, something very unusual happened.

Taco started crying as soon as the staff took Merrill out of her cage. It was as if he knew what was happening. Everybody in the room was heartbroken, and the man adopting Merrill was very confused.

A Good Explanation

It was clear to the staff that Taco was crying because he couldn't bear to be separated from Merrill. These two dogs had been through a lot together and they really didn't want to live without each other. The staff explained the situation to Merrill's new owner.

They wondered what would become of Taco now that Merrill was probably leaving the shelter. Would this owner potentially adopt both Merrill and Taco? Everybody was waiting to find out.

The man realized that he couldn't separate these two dogs, but he also didn't have the means to take two dogs into his home at one time. He ended up adopting a different dog— one who didn't have such a strong bond with another shelter dog.

The staff were happy that the man decided not to separate the pups, but they were also sad that Merrill and Taco had not yet found their forever home.

Taco was already in his old age by the time he and Merrill had been adopted. It was only when they moved into their new home that Taco's health issues began arising.

Taco was afflicted with both a dental disease and asthma, which caused him to have only four teeth and an adorable floppy tongue that always sticks out. It was clear that Taco and Merrill's previous owners didn't care for them as they should've.

After a few months, Taco's new family finally took him to the veterinarian to get a full assessment of his ailments. Taco was actually suffering from heart failure.

His heart was enlarged and there was fluid surrounding his lungs, which made it harder to breathe when combined with his asthma. It was then that the family feared the worst for Taco, who they hoped would stay with them for at least a year.

But what really helped Taco through these trying times was having Merrill by his side. After all, they've been on this journey together since the beginning.

Thankfully, Taco's treatment was working and he started feeling better. His heart began to stabilize and he was able to start living the normal life of a dog.

Taco's treatment included anti-seizure medication and steroids because of the fluid around his lungs. While his heart was on its way to healing, he would also be subjected to medication for the rest of his life. Still, Taco was given a miraculous second chance to live his life with Merrill and his new family.
