Augusto Pinochet rose through the ranks of the Chilean Army until President Salvador Allende eventually appointed him Commander in Chief. One month later, Pinochet (backed by the U.S) overthrew the president. Under his rule, 1,200 to 3,200 people were killed, tens of thousands were tortured, and many more forced into internment.
