A physician by profession, François Duvalier became known as Papa Doc. After discovering a military coup d’état the year after he was elected president of Haiti in 1957, his rule became increasingly despotic and totalitarian. Under his control, the government’s undercover death squad killed off opponents and dissidents. As a result, citizens were terrified to speak badly of him even when in private. He remained in power until his death in 1971.
