What Started With Some Strange Pipes Sticking Out Of The Ground Ended With A Startling Discovery

Incredible | 8/21/20

One day, a man by the name of Dale Hufford decided to leave his home in Baltimore and visit his friend Mike Peter in Germany. It was a long trip, but Dale hadn't seen Mike in a while and he really wanted to see Germany for himself. Mike told Dale that there were a couple of "pipes" sticking up in the ground near his house. When Dale got to Germany, he and Mike decided to explore this whole pipe situation.

At the time, Mike and Dale had no idea that their inquisitive nature would lead them into the woods and deep underground would spiral into a fantastic tale that included everything from buried treasure to a run-in with the law.

Dale Was Excited

Dale had been thinking about the pipes Mike mentioned during the entire flight to Germany. He was so excited to investigate these mysterious objects. Mike told Dale that he believed the pipes continued deep underground.

There were signs around the area indicating that there was a structure of some sort beneath the forest floor. Dale had a feeling that he and his friend were about to discover something huge. He couldn't wait to get digging.

The Pipes In Question

When Dale arrived in Germany, Mike took him to the location of the pipes. The pipes didn't say much. They just stood quietly in the ground on a cold afternoon. They did look quite intriguing against the forest backdrop. It was like nature and technology were colliding.

To Dale, it kind of looked like the pipes were two guards on the edge of the forest. But what were they guarding? Dale had to find out.

Mike and Dale circled the area around the pipes until they discovered that about 100 meters away from the pipes' location, there was something that looked like a concrete entrance. They moved closer to the rectangular hole to get a better look.

Stairs were leading down to some area beneath and there was an old iron gate at the entrance. Also, there was a sign that warned, "Betreten Verboten" or, "Do Not Enter." Of course, that meant they had to enter.

After noticing that the lock on the iron gate was broken, Dale and Mike pushed the gate open and started to walk down the very rusty stairs. They had been warned by the sign and by locals that there could be military weapons on the site. Still, their curiosity got the better of them. They continued down the hallway while trying to be as cautious as possible.

Nothing could have prepared them for what they were about to find.

The corridor seemed to go on forever. There were branches off of the main hall, but Mike didn't want to get lost, so he told Dale to keep walking straight ahead. They knew they could easily end up lost in a labyrinth. It seemed like they were walking for hours.

Mike and Dale didn't know who or what would be waiting for them further on down the track, but they continued to carefully walk on.

As they were walking through the underground hallway, Mike and Dale heard a noise that startled them. At first, they thought it sounded like a girl's laugh. But that would be impossible, right? They also started smelling something pretty strange.

The smell was getting stronger as they continued down the hallway. They had no idea what it could be. At this point, they were both starting to get pretty nervous. Still, the continued their journey.

As Dale and Mike were walking through the tunnel, Dale noticed that there were some strange markings on the walls. It looked like a boxer had punched the wall super hard. Dale had no idea why, but the thought of someone else being down in the hallway with them made his skin crawl.

He briefly thought about going back to the entrance, but he realized that he and Mike had come too far to turn back now.

As the two men walked down the hall, they came across a rusted yellow door that had been ripped off of its hinges. Dale thought that the door looked like the door of a vault. It was like somebody couldn't figure out how to unlock it, so they just ripped it off. The door also had some Cyrillic writing stenciled onto it.

Something might have been waiting for them if they kept going, but they kept walking anyway.

Dale and Mike plugged their noses and kept going. They weren't going to let a bad smell hold them back.

Mike was sure that he saw someone, but by the time that Dale looked in the direction he was pointing, the figure was already gone.

Now they were really starting to get scared. Still, they walked on.

Not able to stand the uncertainty anymore, John thought about what he was going to do next. He could fill in any holes and repair his lawn later. The task at hand was more important than his yard's appearance. So he got out a shovel and started to dig.

He was shocked to learn that there was a vast room deep underneath his backyard! And it was in good shape, complete with a solid floor. But that wasn't all. In fact, there was an entire system of tunnels forming a complex down there!

John's friend, the former owner of the house John recently purchased, had told him about the existence of a secret buried deep in the backyard. Through research, John had learned that the structure in question had been built by a company called Whitaker Pools.

But this underground cavern was clearly not a pool. The year it was constructed, 1961, was a huge clue to the structure's intended purpose. And John knew what that purpose was as soon as he laid eyes on the space.

Although the structure seemed to be in pretty good shape given its age, one thing was a giveaway to John that he still had some work to make the space safe. The clue was in the fiberglass ceiling.

Fiberglass can be extremely toxic to people if they breathe it in, and is an irritant to bare skin. And the fiberglass in the ceiling was coming apart – not a good thing at all. But it was something that could be repaired, fortunately. And John wasn't ready to give up on his new find anyway, after all the work he had put in.

The structure below John Sims' house, although huge, was empty of furnishings or any other décor. It became obvious immediately that the underground bunker was built as a nuclear fallout shelter.

Many people had grown fearful, even paranoid, during the period of Cold War hostilities between the Soviet Union and the U.S., and had built backyard bomb shelters as a result. But why had a company called Whitaker Pools built a nuclear bunker?

It turns out that Whitaker Pools had responded to consumer demand during the Cold War and had added building backyard bomb shelters to its list of services. In fact, this was pretty common across the country.

As pool builders realized that building fallout shelters wasn't all that different from building inground pool shells, many of them expanded their operations accordingly. By 1961, one Los Angeles company called Catalina Pools had built 500 shelters!

Other people around the world have converted old bunkers into beautiful modern homes, hotels, art galleries, and recording studios. But John had something different in mind for his backyard treasure.

John's next step in restoring his bunker to its former glory was setting up a GoFundMe page. He wrote, "Hi, I'm John and I need some help restoring a vintage Fallout Shelter that I have uncovered in my back yard."

He was specifically looking for assistance in reconstructing the shelter's entryway, since that needed to be done before he could start making repairs and improvements downstairs. He elaborated, "the upper entry needs a large concrete pour to secure the entry and the metal circular staircase needs to be replaced." John estimated that the project would cost around $2,000.

Although John's GoFundMe campaign was widely shared and he received several hundred dollars in donations, the goal of raising $2,000 for the stairway rebuild ultimately fell short. Of course, that didn't stop John from proceeding with his plans! He even took time off from his job to work on the all-important staircase.

After sharing a series of updates on the project, John reported that the entry area was finally done: "Stairs are finished! Now it's easy and safe to climb in and out." He also posted a photo of the completed stairs, which are painted an appealing shade of blue.

On his GoFundMe page, John shared further details for his shelter now that the staircase and entryway are done. "My plans are to clean up the interior, repaint it and turn it into a really cool man cave, HAM shack, and Civil Defense Museum."

He continued, "Once I started this project I researched a bunch about the Cold War period and how the civilian fears prompted many people to build these shelters." Discovering this bunker has clearly made a big impact on John's life!

John has already begun amassing supplies and props for the museum portion of his backyard shelter. He says that he's found artifacts like water supply barrels, Geiger counters, HAM radios, and sanitation kits to display.
