Two weeks into the 2018-19 NHL season, the identity of one team is already crystal clear. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the ultimate boom or bust team. Their defense gives away points like Oprah does cars, while their offense scores points at a record-setting pace. It’s still early, but right now, the four leading scorers in the league play for Toronto.
A few other important facts you need to know are: Auston Matthews is on a blistering 143 goal pace. Morgan Reilly has the most assists after five games than any player since World War I. Matthews nine goals in five games ties the NHL record previously set by Patrick Marleau and Alex Ovechkin.
So far the sailing has been smooth for the 4-1-0 Maple Leafs. At some point, though, we expect losses to start piling up. Their offense may be historically good, but their defense is historically bad. It’s not easy giving up 20 goals in five games, no matter how Toronto makes it look. So how do they fix the problem?
For right now, they don’t. Toronto is a young team. It’s amazing they currently have an offense doing what it’s doing. If they can continue to score goals, then their defense will have time to learn how to stop goals. And that’s when they become really scary. For now, let’s all just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show being put on every few nights in Toronto. Don’t forget the popcorn!
